Our major research deals with oral cancer, so prevalent in North East besides prostate, lung and breast cancer. Our team is primarily engaged in identifying a molecule that could intervene in the survival and immortality of cancer cells. In doing this we have discovered molecules which trigger the expressions of epigenetically silenced tumor suppressor genes and proteins which a cancer cell needs to knock out prior to qualifying itself as an abnormal cell. Without this knock out act, it cannot successfully acquire the properties of proliferation, immortality and invasion. In our endeavor, the priority is given to therapeutic intervention by chemical compounds from natural sources. This endeavor requires a network of scientists from different disciplines including medical sciences without which the fight against one of the greatest killers of human life will not be successful. My intention is to have an umbrella where we can have meaningful cooperation forgetting our self interest. Therefore, my talk will have an open approach under the title, ‘What Can We Do for Cancer?’ I look forward to inputs regarding other dimensions of cancer therapy in our ensuing discussions so that a novel effort in dealing with this unstoppable disease could be developed.
